Where to stay in Bari: the best areas
Bari Vecchia
The old town has guesthouses, apartments and the odd boutique hotel in restored buildings. The Basilica of St Nicholas, the cathedral and the castle are a few steps away. Its squares are lively at night, so if you want quiet choose your street carefully. The alleys are closed to cars, worth bearing in mind if you arrive with luggage.
Murattiano
Between the old town and the central station lies this district of straight streets, with shops, the Petruzzelli theatre and Via Sparano. It has most of the city hotels and apartments, and is the most practical area if you are taking day trips by train. Bari Vecchia is about ten minutes' walk away.
Madonnella and the seafront
South-east of the centre, the Madonnella is a traditional district by the seafront promenade, with apartments and some hotels with sea views. It is a stroll from the old town along the coast and has more of a neighbourhood feel. A good choice for walking by the water in the morning.
Torre a Mare
At the southern edge of the municipality, this old fishing village has a small harbour, rocky coves and simple places to stay and apartments. It is quieter and linked to the centre by train. It suits you if you prefer the sea to the city and don't mind the journey.
