What the Catalan Pyrenees are like
The Catalan Pyrenees stretch from the Val d’Aran to the Garrotxa, with the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, the Romanesque churches of the Boí valley, a World Heritage Site, and ski resorts such as Baqueira Beret, La Molina and Masella.
Which town to choose
Baqueira is the biggest ski resort in Spain, with mountain hotels and apartments. Puigcerdà and La Molina are in the Cerdanya, Espot and the Boí valley are the gateways to Aigüestortes, and Sort, Llavorsí and the Pallars are for rafting and water sports. In Girona, Camprodon, Ribes de Freser and Beget have stone villages and fewer people.
When to go
In winter, from December to April, for skiing. In summer for hiking and river sports, and in autumn to see the forests change colour.
Getting around
La Molina and Puigcerdà have trains from Barcelona on the R3 line. For everywhere else you need a car, and some passes close with snow.
