Where to stay in Puigcerdà: the best areas

Old town and Plaça de Santa Maria

The upper part of Puigcerdà is where town life happens. The Plaça de Santa Maria, with the bell tower that survived the war, and the town hall square, with its viewpoint over the valley and the mountains on the French side, are a few steps from the main street and its shops. Here you have everything on foot: restaurants, cake shops and sunny terraces.

It is the best area if you want to stroll in the evening after skiing or a hike, without needing the car for dinner.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Parada Puigcerda, with a score of 8.6 from 4,102 reviews.

The Lake

North of the old town is Puigcerdà lake, surrounded by gardens and early 20th-century summer villas. It is the quietest and most elegant part, with a flat path round the water much loved by families and runners. The centre is a short walk uphill. It suits longer stays, among streets of low houses with few cars.

Around the station

The station, in the lower town, is served by the R3 commuter line from Barcelona. Staying nearby lets you arrive without a car and walk up to the centre. From here it is also easy to walk across to Bourg-Madame, in France. It is the area for those arriving from Barcelona by train, even with ski gear.

Llívia, Bolvir and Guils

Llívia is a Spanish enclave surrounded by French territory, with its fortified church and the old pharmacy you can visit in the municipal museum. Bolvir and Guils de Cerdanya are small villages of stone and slate houses on the plain and the hillside. All three have a more rural feel and houses and apartments for groups, but you will want a car, especially if you plan to go up to the slopes at La Molina and Masella.
