Where to stay on the Costa Brava
What the Costa Brava is like
The Costa Brava is the coastline of Girona, some 200 km of rugged shore between Blanes and Portbou, with coves among the pines, coastal paths linking the beaches and fishing villages. Behind it lies the Empordà, with medieval villages such as Pals and Peratallada.
Which town to choose
Lloret de Mar and Tossa have the most choice and the liveliest atmosphere; Blanes is the southern gateway, with direct trains from Barcelona. Calella de Palafrugell, Begur and its coves are smaller and quieter, and Roses and Cadaqués, in the north, sit next to Cap de Creus. For families, the long beaches of Roses, Sant Antoni de Calonge and Sant Feliu de Guíxols.
When to go
July and August are the busiest and most expensive months; in June and September the sea is still warm and there’s more space. Many hotels in the small villages close from November to March.
Getting around
You need a car to explore the coves, although in summer parking near the water is hard. The nearest airports are Girona and Barcelona, and the high-speed train stops at Girona and Figueres.
