Old town and harbour

Blanes town centre lies behind the harbour, with narrow streets, the church of Santa MarΓa and the Gothic fountain. Fishing boats unload in the harbour, surrounded by restaurants serving fish and rice dishes. Close by are the bus station and the pier for the tourist boats to Lloret and Tossa. It suits anyone who wants to get around on foot and see the town's everyday life, not just the beach.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Costa Brava, with a score of 8.1 from 4,700 reviews.

Passeig de Mar and Sa Palomera

The Passeig de Mar follows the main beach to the rock of Sa Palomera, which splits the bay in two. It is the liveliest stretch, with terraces, ice-cream parlours and people strolling until late. Staying here puts you a step from the water and the centre at the same time. In summer it is noisy and crowded, so ask for an inside room if that bothers you. In July, during the fireworks, this stretch fills up every night.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel HoritzΓ³ by Pierre & Vacances, with a score of 8.3 from 3,414 reviews.

S'Abanell and Els Pins

South of Sa Palomera begins s'Abanell beach, long and wide, which continues as Els Pins towards the mouth of the river Tordera. This is the area with the most apartments and beach hotels, and there are campsites too. It is mainly chosen by families. The centre is within walking distance along the promenade, though it is a fair way from the southern end. Blanes train station, on the Rodalies R1 line, is inland, so to get to Barcelona you will need a bus or taxi to reach it.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel HoritzΓ³ by Pierre & Vacances, with a score of 8.3 from 3,414 reviews.

Sant Francesc and the gardens

To the north the coastline turns rocky, with coves such as Sant Francesc and Santa Anna and pine trees down to the water. Up the hill are the Marimurtra and Pinya de Rosa botanical gardens, and Sant Joan castle crowns the top. There are quiet houses and developments on the slopes. They suit you if you want calm and have a car, because the hills are steep.

Best-rated in this area: VILLA LA CALA with swimming pool & sea view, 10 min walk from the sea, with a score of 9.4 from 3 reviews.
