Where to stay in El Port de la Selva: the best areas

Harbour and seafront

The heart of the village is the strip between the fishing harbour and the main beach, with whitewashed houses facing the bay. Here you have the fish market, the boats, terraces serving fish and rice dishes and the start of the coastal paths to the coves of Cap de Creus. You can spend several days without moving the car, going down for an early swim and coming back to the seafront for lunch.

In July and August it fills up and rooms sell out early, so if you want this area, book well ahead.

La Selva de Mar

The old village lies a few kilometres inland, in a valley of olive groves and dry-stone terraces. It has narrow streets, a bridge over the stream and an almost rural feel, with the odd holiday rental. It's on the way to Sant Pere de Rodes, so it suits those who want to spend time at the monastery, Verdera castle and the mountain trails, and prefer to sleep away from the summer bustle of the coast. The beach is a few minutes' drive down.

Llançà

To the west along the coast road, Llançà has more on offer and two centres: the old town, around the Plaça Major, and the harbour district, by the beaches. Its station is on the R11 line between Barcelona, Figueres and Portbou, so you can get there without a car. It makes a convenient base for combining El Port de la Selva with Colera, Portbou or French Catalonia.

The hillsides around the bay are dotted with flats and holiday homes with sea views. They are quiet and roomy, many with a terrace, and ideal for families staying a week, although many involve climbing hills or taking the car down to the harbour.
