Where to stay on the Ruta de la Plata
What the Ruta de la Plata is like
It follows the Roman road that linked Mérida with Astorga and was later extended to Seville and the Cantabrian coast. Today the A-66 motorway runs along it, and it’s also one of the routes of the Camino de Santiago, the Vía de la Plata. It crosses Andalusia, Extremadura, Castile and León and Asturias.
Where to stop
Mérida, with its Roman theatre, and Cáceres, with its monumental old town, are the classic stops in Extremadura. Further north are Plasencia, the Jewish quarter of Hervás and Béjar, and then Salamanca, Zamora, León and Astorga. Zafra is a good stop between Seville and Mérida.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the best seasons. In summer the Andalusian and Extremaduran stretch is very hot, especially for pilgrims. In winter the north can have snow on the passes.
Getting around
The most comfortable way is by car on the A-66, with towns every 50 to 100 km. There are buses between the main cities, but no train covers the whole route.
