Plaza Grande and Plaza Chica

The two arcaded squares are the heart of Zafra and where the small-town atmosphere is strongest. Around them are terraces, tapas bars and pedestrian streets leading to all the monuments. The Alcázar and Plaza de España

The palace of the Dukes of Feria rises beside Plaza de España, a couple of streets from the arcaded squares. Sleeping around here, or in the alcázar itself, now a parador, puts the heritage round the corner, with slightly wider streets. It is very popular with couples and those wanting accommodation with history.

Calle Sevilla and Puerta de Jerez

Calle Sevilla is the main shopping street of the centre, with shops, cafés and plenty of strolling in the late afternoon. Following it you reach the Puerta de Jerez, one of the gates of the old wall. This strip combines daytime street life with calmer nights than the squares. It suits you if you want to be central without terraces under your window.

Ensanche, station and fairground

Outside the old town are more modern districts, the train station and the fairground where the International Livestock Fair is held. Parking is easier here and there is direct access to the A-66, the Vía de la Plata motorway. Mérida and Seville lie in that direction. It is the area to choose if you are coming for the fair or for work, or using Zafra as a base for southern Badajoz.
