Where to stay in Mérida: the best areas

Plaza de España and Calle Santa Eulalia

Plaza de España is Mérida's meeting point, with terraces and the town hall on one side. Beside it starts Calle Santa Eulalia, the main shopping street, and in a few minutes you reach the Temple of Diana, surrounded by bars for an early-evening drink. Staying here puts you in the middle of everything and you will hardly need a vehicle.

It appeals to first-time visitors and anyone who wants to eat out every night. The train station is also close, north-west of the old town.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Ilunion Mérida Palace, with a score of 8.9 from 8,406 reviews.

The Theatre and Roman Museum area

East of the centre are the Roman theatre and amphitheatre, and opposite them the National Museum of Roman Art. The surrounding streets are quiet and residential. Staying here lets you reach the monuments early, before the groups arrive, and it is very convenient if you are coming to see a performance in the theatre. La Rambla and the Basilica of Santa Eulalia are a short walk away.

By the Guadiana and the Roman bridge

The edge of the old town facing the Guadiana has the Arab Alcazaba and the Roman bridge, now pedestrianised. The riverbanks have paths and green spaces for walking or running. It is a pleasant area for couples and anyone who prefers a calm atmosphere while staying close to Plaza de España.

Across the river

Over the Lusitania bridge, designed by Santiago Calatrava, the city becomes more modern, with wide avenues and newer blocks. There is accommodation with its own parking and quick access to the motorway, useful if you are driving around Extremadura. You can walk back to the centre over either bridge, with good views of the city from the river.
