Where to stay in Béjar: the best areas

Old town and Plaza Mayor

Béjar stretches along a ridge, and its old part occupies the upper area. If you stay around the Plaza Mayor or Calle Mayor, you are next to the Ducal Palace, the church of Santa María and the museums, such as the one devoted to Mateo Hernández. There are old-fashioned bars where you can try calderillo bejarano, the town's typical stew.

The streets are fairly steep, so it is an area to explore on foot, leaving the car parked.

Best-rated in this area: Hostal Extremeño, with a score of 9.0 from 1,164 reviews.

River Cuerpo de Hombre and El Bosque

Heading down to the river you find the old cloth mills, some of them restored, and on the outskirts is El Bosque, the Renaissance villa with gardens and a pond. Those sleeping in this part have green walks nearby and direct access to the road, useful if you are touring the area or heading up to Hervás and the Ambroz valley.

El Castañar

On a rise covered in chestnut trees, on the outskirts, stand the sanctuary of the Virgen del Castañar and one of the oldest bullrings in Spain. The places to stay here have a mountain feel and fresh air, and appeal to those seeking peace without being far from town.

Candelario and the road to La Covatilla

A few kilometres away, Candelario keeps its half-timbered houses, the batipuertas (half doors) at the entrances and the channels that carry water down the streets. It has rural houses and small hotels, and is the place for those coming to hike in the sierra or wanting a picture-postcard village for the weekend.

In winter the road to La Covatilla starts from this area, so sleeping here shortens the drive to the slopes. Carry chains or winter tyres.
