Where to stay in Puente la Reina: the best areas
Calle Mayor and the bridge
The Calle Mayor runs through the town from end to end and leads to the Romanesque bridge over the Arga. Along it are the church of Santiago, with its multi-lobed doorway, and the Plaza Mena, with arcades and bars. At the other end, by the entrance from Pamplona, is the church of the Crucifijo.
Staying here lets you see the bridge lit up and set off first thing with the pilgrims. It suits those walking the Camino and those coming for a weekend on foot from the old town, without moving the car.
Best-rated in this area: Albergue Estrella Guia, with a score of 8.8 from 2,424 reviews.
Across the Arga
Across the bridge there are more scattered houses and the Camino heading out towards Mañeru. It is an area of market gardens and flat paths along the river, convenient for those travelling by car who prefer to come and go via the A-12, the Camino motorway linking Pamplona with Logroño.
Obanos
Obanos, on a hill a short distance away, is where many place the meeting of the French and Aragonese Ways. It has a stately square, houses with coats of arms and open views over the Valdizarbe. It offers quiet rural accommodation, with Puente la Reina a walk away along the path. It is a good choice for those who want to walk the Camino stretches of the Valdizarbe and return to the same place each night.
Eunate and Muruzábal
Muruzábal, among vineyards, is a few kilometres from the octagonal chapel of Santa María de Eunate, isolated in the middle of the fields. Staying here is for those looking for vineyard scenery and very silent nights. You need a car, and in return you have Eunate, the local wineries and the climb to the Sierra del Perdón close at hand.
