How free walking tours work in France
What is a free walking tour?
A free walking tour is a guided walk through a city centre with no set price: you book for free and, at the end, each traveller pays the guide what they think the walk was worth. Most last between an hour and a half and two and a half hours, leave from a central square at a fixed time and cover the monuments, streets and stories that best explain the place.
In France they have become the most common way to get a first feel for a city: you walk at an easy pace, ask whatever you like and, along the way, the guide recommends where to eat or what to see afterwards on your own.
How much should you tip on a free walking tour?
There is no set amount. The usual thing is to leave something similar to what a paid guided tour of the same length would cost, adjusted to how it went: more if the guide told the city’s story well and answered questions, less if the group was huge or the route felt short. Families usually give one amount for the whole group.
It’s a good idea to carry cash, although more and more guides accept card or mobile payment at the end of the tour.
How to book and what to bear in mind
Even though you pay nothing upfront, you need to book a place: groups have a maximum size and fill up in high season. Each city page lists the free tours and guided visits on Civitatis with times, language and reviews; booking is free and, if your plans change, you can cancel at no cost and free up the place for someone else.
Arrive ten minutes early at the meeting point, wear comfortable shoes, bring water and check whether the route goes inside monuments: the free tour passes them and explains them, but tickets to cathedrals, palaces or museums are paid separately and are often sold as a guided visit of their own.
Night, legends and themed tours
As well as the classic route through the old town, many cities have free tours in the evening: mysteries and legends, the medieval city, specific neighbourhoods or film and TV locations. They make a good second outing once you’ve done the general walk, and in summer they let you walk when it’s cooler.
Free walking tour or paid guided tour?
A free walking tour is ideal for understanding a city quickly and deciding what to see next. A paid guided tour makes sense when you want to go inside a particular monument with a guide (the Louvre, Versailles, Mont-Saint-Michel), go in a small or private group, or take a trip to another town. Each city page shows both options together so you can compare.
Frequently asked questions about free walking tours
Are free walking tours really free?
Booking is free and there is no set price: at the end of the tour each person gives the guide the tip they think is fair. You don’t have to pay a specific amount.
Do I need to book a free walking tour?
Yes. Groups have limited places and the guide plans each departure around the bookings. If you can’t make it, cancel to free up your place; it costs nothing.
Are the tours in English?
In the most visited cities there are departures in English every day, and in the rest it depends on the season. The language is shown on each activity before you book.
How long does a free walking tour last?
Most last between an hour and a half and two and a half hours, on foot and with stops. Night and themed tours are usually a little shorter.
Do free walking tours include entry to the monuments?
No. The route passes the monuments and explains them from outside; tickets are bought separately or booked as a guided visit of their own.
