What to see in Porticcio

Must-sees

Porticcio is a beach resort in Corse-du-Sud, on the southern shore of the Gulf of Ajaccio, right opposite the Corsican capital. Its main draw is the beaches of fine sand and calm water that follow one another along the coast, such as Agosta and Porticcio beach itself, with views of Ajaccio and the mountains inland.

Following the coast south, the Isolella peninsula and the municipalities of Pietrosella and Coti-Chiavari hide coves and more open beaches, such as Ruppione and Verghia, and Genoese towers that once watched over the gulf. Across the water lie the Sanguinaires islands, off the Pointe de la Parata, and the town of Ajaccio, with its old town and Napoleon’s birthplace, which you can reach by boat or car.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Porticcio: the plan here is the sea. Civitatis offers several boat trips, including a cruise to the Sanguinaires islands, a sunset trip to the same islands, a day trip to the Scandola reserve and Girolata and another towards Bonifacio and its cliffs. To visit Ajaccio, a ferry shuttle crosses the gulf in season.

How long to spend

Porticcio is a place to stay for several days. With three or four you have time to alternate the gulf’s beaches with a boat trip to the Sanguinaires and a visit to Ajaccio. With a week you can add the long trip to Scandola or Bonifacio and an outing into the island’s interior.

Where to stay

The most convenient place to stay is central Porticcio, near the main beach, the restaurants and the ferry landing for Ajaccio. If you prefer peace and quiet, the coast towards Isolella and Coti-Chiavari has holiday residences and houses with views of the gulf, but you will need a car there. In summer it is best to book well in advance.
