What to see in Azay-le-Rideau
Must-sees
Azay-le-Rideau is a village in Touraine, between Tours and Chinon, on the banks of the Indre. Its château stands on an island in the river where there was already a fortress in the Middle Ages. Gilles Berthelot, treasurer to Francis I, and his wife Philippe Lesbahy began building the Renaissance residence you see today around 1518, in pale tuffeau stone. Berthelot fell from favour in 1527 and the king confiscated his property, so the work was left unfinished, which shows in the asymmetry of the north façade.
The most striking feature inside is the great straight central staircase, open to the outside with loggias, an Italian idea that became a symbol of prestige in France. The rooms are furnished as in the 19th century, when the Marquises of Biencourt restored the building. Outside, the English-style landscape park surrounds the château, and the water of the Indre forms a mirror reflecting the south façade. Balzac described it in The Lily of the Valley as a cut diamond.
Free tours and guided visits
There are no free walking tours in Azay-le-Rideau. The activity Civitatis offers is a ticket for the château, with which you can explore the rooms and the park on your own. If you prefer a guide, many day trips around the Loire châteaux leave from Tours or Paris and often include Azay alongside other nearby châteaux.
How long to spend
Two or three hours is enough for the château and the park, and then you can stroll around the village and along the river. With a full day you can add Villandry and its gardens, or the Château de Saché, home to the Balzac museum, in the same Indre Valley. Chinon and Langeais are also a short drive away, and it is worth allowing two or three days for the area.
Where to stay
The most convenient option is to stay in Azay-le-Rideau itself, which has small hotels, guesthouses and chambres d’hôtes a few minutes from the château. In the evening, once the groups leave, the village is very peaceful. If you want more choice and restaurants, Tours is half an hour away by car or train, and Chinon is another good base for touring the châteaux in this part of the valley.
