What to see in Amboise

Must-sees

Amboise looks out over the Loire between Tours and Blois, and its skyline is dominated by the royal château, which the tourist office describes as the first Renaissance château in the valley. It was a residence of the kings of France, above all Charles VIII and Francis I, and from its terraces you can see the river and the slate roofs of the old town. In the Saint-Hubert chapel, a small Gothic gem inside the grounds, lie the remains attributed to Leonardo da Vinci.

A few minutes’ walk away is the Clos Lucé, the pink brick house where Leonardo spent his final years as the guest of Francis I. You can tour its rooms and, in the park, full-size models of his inventions. Below, the old town has streets of half-timbered houses, the clock tower and the riverside walk. On the outskirts, the Pagoda of Chanteloup is an 18th-century Chinese-inspired tower surrounded by gardens.

Free tours and guided visits

Amboise has no regular free walking tours. The most popular bookings are tickets for the royal château and the Clos Lucé, and the town is a base for day trips to other Loire châteaux: Chambord and Chenonceau, or Villandry and Azay-le-Rideau with a winery visit. There are also more original formats, such as a private sidecar tour of Amboise and Tours or an e-bike route to Chambord and Villesavin.

How long to spend

A full day is enough for the royal château, the Clos Lucé and a stroll around the old town. With two or three days you can use Amboise as a base for visiting Chenonceau, very close by, and other châteaux in the valley, or cycle a stretch of La Loire à Vélo. If you are travelling in summer, book trips in advance and get to the busiest châteaux early.

Where to stay

The most practical place to stay is the old town, below the château, where there are small hotels and guesthouses in old buildings and everything is within walking distance. On the opposite bank and on the Île d’Or, facing the town, there are quieter places with views of the château. If you are driving, the surrounding area has country cottages among the vineyards, and Tours, about 25 kilometres away, offers much more choice and good train connections.
