What to see in Pézenas
Must-sees
Pézenas is in inland Hérault, between Béziers and Montpellier. It often hosted the assemblies of the Estates of Languedoc and was the residence of the province’s governors, and from that golden age remain dozens of 16th- and 17th-century mansions with courtyards, galleries and stone staircases. The joy is stepping into whichever courtyards are open, such as that of the Hôtel de Lacoste, and getting lost among narrow streets and old doorways.
Molière spent several seasons in the town with his theatre company, under the protection of the Prince of Conti, and he is remembered everywhere, with a multimedia space telling his life story. Another charming corner is the old medieval Jewish quarter. The old town is full of craft workshops and galleries, and the Saturday market fills the centre. All around stretch vineyards with wineries you can visit.
Free tours and guided visits
Pézenas has no regular free walking tours. The tourist office runs guided tours of the town, some theatrical or focused on Molière, as well as storytelling tours for families. Civitatis lists a private tour of Languedoc wineries with tastings, done in a classic car and combining the vineyard landscape with visits to several local producers.
How long to spend
Half a day is enough for the old town, the courtyards and the workshops, although it is worth staying for lunch and strolling at leisure. With a full day you can add a nearby winery. If you stay two or three days, Pézenas is a good base for Béziers, the Canal du Midi and the coast at Agde.
Where to stay
Staying in the historic centre lets you enjoy the town once the day visitors leave. There are guesthouses and small hotels in old buildings. The surrounding area has plenty of wine estates with rooms and country cottages with pools, ideal if you are driving. For more choice, Béziers and the coast at Agde are less than half an hour away.
