What to see in Cassis
Must-sees
Cassis is a fishing village on the Provençal coast, east of Marseille, tucked between vineyards and cliffs. Its harbour, with colourful boats and pastel façades, is the heart of village life, surrounded by lanes with shops and café terraces. Above the harbour stands a castle of medieval origin, which cannot be visited but can be seen from almost everywhere. The Grande Mer and Bestouan beaches are a few minutes’ walk away.
The main reason to come is the calanques, narrow limestone inlets with clear water that are part of the Calanques National Park. Footpaths lead from Cassis to Port-Miou, Port-Pin and En-Vau, and boats leave the harbour to tour them from the sea. On the other side of the village, Cap Canaille raises its reddish cliffs, and the Route des Crêtes links Cassis with La Ciotat along the heights. The surrounding vineyards produce a white wine with its own appellation.
Free tours and guided visits
Cassis has no regular free walking tours: almost everything here revolves around nature. You can join a guided hike in the Calanques National Park, an e-bike tour of the park or a paddleboarding outing to see the coast from the water. Boat trips to the calanques also leave from the harbour.
How long to spend
The village itself can be seen in a couple of hours, but Cassis deserves at least a full day. Spend the morning walking to the calanques, ideally early and with water and proper footwear, and the afternoon at the harbour, the beach or on a boat trip. With two or three days you can add Cap Canaille, La Ciotat and a winery or two. In summer, access to the park’s trails may be restricted because of fire risk, so check before setting out.
Where to stay
Staying in the centre, by the harbour, lets you do everything on foot and enjoy the village once the day visitors leave, although choice is limited and it is best to book early. Towards Bestouan and Port-Miou there are quieter hotels and apartments, close to the trails. If you can’t find anywhere, La Ciotat and Marseille have more options and are a short distance away.
