What to see in Salses-le-Château
Must-sees
Salses-le-Château is a village in the Pyrénées-Orientales, north of Perpignan, between the Salses-Leucate lagoon and the Corbières hills. The old border between the Crown of Aragon and France ran through here, which explains its great fortress. Ferdinand II of Aragon had it built at the end of the 15th century, designed to withstand the artillery of the time: very thick stone and brick walls, low towers and a moat surrounding the whole enclosure.
The fortress is an example of military architecture in transition between the medieval castle and the modern fortification. When Roussillon passed to France in the 17th century, the border moved south and Vauban altered some of its defences. Inside you will explore courtyards, barracks, stables and passageways. From the terraces you can see the lagoon, the vineyards and, on clear days, Canigou. The monument is run by the Centre des monuments nationaux.

How long to spend
The fortress can be seen well in an hour and a half to two hours. You can round off the morning with a stroll around the village and then head to the edge of the lagoon. With a full day you have time for lunch in Perpignan or on the coast and a swim at the beaches of Le Barcarès or Leucate, a few kilometres away.
Where to stay
The village has few places to stay, mostly guesthouses and apartments. The most practical option is to stay in Perpignan, less than half an hour away, which has hotels of every kind and good train connections. If you are travelling in summer and want the beach, Le Barcarès, Port-Leucate and Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque have seafront apartments and campsites very close to the fortress.
