What to see in Antibes

Must-sees

Antibes is on the Côte d’Azur, between Nice and Cannes. Its old town, protected by seafront ramparts, has narrow streets, small squares and a covered Provençal market on Cours Masséna. Above the ramparts stands the Château Grimaldi, where Picasso worked in 1946 and which is now the Picasso Museum, with his works from that period and a terrace overlooking the Mediterranean.

Next to the old town is Port Vauban, a large marina watched over by Fort Carré, a star-shaped fortress you can visit. On the Saint-Jaume bastion, Jaume Plensa’s sculpture Nomade looks out to sea. To the south stretches the Cap d’Antibes, with villas, coves and a coastal path among the rocks, and the Garoupe lighthouse, with views of the coast and the Alps. Juan-les-Pins, in the same municipality, has sandy beaches and nightlife.

Free tours and guided visits

Antibes has a free walking tour of the old town and the ramparts, an easy way to get your bearings. There is also a sightseeing bus that tours the town and the cape, stopping at the main sights. If you are travelling with children, you can book tickets for the town’s water park. Antibes is close to Nice and Cannes, so it is easy to combine with other visits along the coast.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the old town, the market and the Picasso Museum. With a full day you can add Fort Carré, the port and a walk around the Cap d’Antibes. If you are here for the sea, spend two or three days alternating beaches, the coastal path and trips to Cannes, Nice or hill villages such as Saint-Paul-de-Vence.

Where to stay

The old town is ideal for walking everywhere, with small hotels and apartments. Juan-les-Pins is the best option if you want a sandy beach and nightlife. The Cap d’Antibes offers villas and quiet hotels by the sea, and the station area is practical if you are getting around the coast by train.
