What to see in Saint-Jean-de-Luz
Must-sees
Saint-Jean-de-Luz is a town on the French Basque coast, opening onto a bay sheltered by breakwaters, with a calm, family-friendly sandy beach. The fishing port, shared with Ciboure, is still active, and the streets of the centre keep traditional Basque houses with painted timber frames. The pedestrian Rue Gambetta is lined with shops selling Basque produce and pastry shops, and the covered market is close by.
The town holds a major historical memory: Louis XIV and Maria Theresa of Spain were married in the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in 1660. Inside, the wooden galleries and the great gilded altarpiece catch the eye. On the square by the port are the Maison Louis XIV, where the king stayed, and the Maison de l’Infante. Across the harbour, Ciboure, Ravel’s birthplace, leads to the Fort de Socoa, with views over the bay.
Free tours and guided visits
Saint-Jean-de-Luz has no regular free walking tours. On Civitatis you will find a guided tour of the town and a boat trip along the Basque coast to see the cliffs from the sea. If you are in the area, you can also combine it with trips to Biarritz, Bayonne or the Spanish side of the border.
How long to spend
One day is enough for the centre, the port, the church and the beach. With two days you can cross to Ciboure and Socoa, walk a stretch of the coastal path towards Hendaye or ride the rack railway up La Rhune. It is also a good base for the inland villages, such as Sare and Ainhoa, and for nearby Biarritz.
Where to stay
The most practical place to stay is the centre, between the beach and the port, with everything within walking distance. Ciboure, across the bridge, is a little quieter and very close. In summer the town fills up and prices rise, so book early. If you can’t find anywhere, Hendaye and Biarritz have more choice.
