What to see in Limoges
Must-sees
Limoges, capital of Haute-Vienne, spreads over the hills sloping down to the River Vienne. It is known for its porcelain, made since the late 18th century, and for its enamels, which made the city famous as early as the Middle Ages. The Adrien Dubouché National Museum holds a large collection of porcelain and ceramics from around the world. In the quarter of the Gothic cathedral of Saint-Étienne, the Museum of Fine Arts occupies the 18th-century former bishop’s palace and holds some 600 enamels, surrounded by terraced gardens overlooking the river.
The Boucherie quarter, with half-timbered houses, recalls the old butchers’ guild, and here stands the small chapel of Saint-Aurélien. The covered market, Les Halles, is close by. The Bénédictins station, with its tall clock tower, is worth a look even if you are not travelling by train. Below, the medieval bridges of Saint-Étienne and Saint-Martial cross the Vienne. About 25 kilometres away, Oradour-sur-Glane preserves the ruins of the village destroyed in 1944, a deeply moving place of remembrance.
Free tours and guided visits
Limoges has no regular free walking tours. On Civitatis you will find tickets for the National Porcelain Museum, a good way to understand why the city is tied to this craft. The tourist office offers guided tours of the Boucherie quarter for groups, by appointment. On your own, the centre is easy to explore on foot and it is simple to link museums, cathedral and markets in the same walk.
How long to spend
One day covers the essentials: the porcelain museum, the cathedral, the Museum of Fine Arts with its gardens and the Boucherie quarter. With two days you can slow down, visit a porcelain workshop or shop and walk down to the bridges over the Vienne. If you have another half day, a visit to Oradour-sur-Glane is well worth the trip.
Where to stay
To get around on foot, the best option is to stay in the centre, between Place de la République and Les Halles, with hotels in several categories and apartments. Around the Bénédictins station there are practical hotels if you arrive by train. If you want peace and quiet, the cathedral area is close to the gardens and the river. In the Limousin countryside there are country cottages for those travelling by car.
