What to see in La Rochelle

Must-sees

La Rochelle is an Atlantic port city, and its signature image is the entrance to the Vieux-Port, guarded by the Saint-Nicolas and Chain towers. A little further on, following the old wall, is the Lantern Tower, which served as a lighthouse and a prison. All three can be visited, and from the top you can see the port, the city and the islands. Beyond the Grosse Horloge gate begins the historic centre, with arcaded streets and pale stone houses.

In the old town, the Renaissance-style town hall stands out, and there are several museums, among them the Maritime Museum, with ships moored in the dock. La Rochelle Aquarium is next to the port and draws many visitors. To the south lies Les Minimes, with a large marina and a beach. A long bridge links the city with the Île de Ré, with its villages of white houses, salt pans and cycle paths.

Free tours and guided visits

La Rochelle has no regular free walking tours. What’s on offer focuses on the sea: sailing trips or traditional boat trips around the bay, and catamaran outings along the coast, including at sunset. If you want to learn the city’s history with a guide, you can book a private tour of the centre and the port.

How long to spend

In one day you can see the Vieux-Port, the towers and the old town. With two you can add the aquarium or the Maritime Museum and a boat trip. If you have three or more, cross to the Île de Ré and explore it by bike, or take a boat to the Île d’Aix.

Where to stay

The best place to stay is by the Vieux-Port or in the historic centre, where everything is within walking distance and the quays are lively at night. The station area, very close by, has practical options if you arrive by train. If you want a beach, Les Minimes and Châtelaillon-Plage are good alternatives, and the Île de Ré is ideal for a few quiet days, although it gets very busy in summer.
