What to see in Mont-Saint-Michel

Must-sees

Mont-Saint-Michel is a rocky islet in the bay where Normandy meets Brittany, crowned by a Benedictine abbey begun in the Middle Ages. The Mont and its bay are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the abbey is run by the Centre des monuments nationaux. Highlights inside are the abbey church at the top, the cloister suspended over the void and the Gothic halls of the Merveille. From the terraces you look out over the whole bay.

To climb up you follow the Grande Rue, the village’s narrow, steep main street, lined with shops and restaurants. The ramparts offer an alternative walk with views of the sea or the sand, depending on the tide. The bay has a very large tidal range, and watching the water surround the Mont at spring tides is quite a sight. Access is by a footbridge from the mainland, on foot or by shuttle.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours at Mont-Saint-Michel. What Civitatis offers is a ticket for the abbey, so you can visit at your own pace. Another well-known experience is crossing the bay on foot over the sand, which must always be done with an approved guide because of the dangerous tides and quicksand. Day trips also leave from cities such as Paris, Rennes and Saint-Malo.

How long to spend

Allow half a day for the abbey, the Grande Rue and the ramparts. If you want to see the Mont in different light and watch the tide come in, it is best to spend a night in the area. With a second day you can cross the bay with a guide or visit Saint-Malo, Cancale or Avranches, all less than an hour’s drive away.

Where to stay

Staying on the Mont itself lets you explore it once the groups have left, although there are few rooms and you have to carry your luggage uphill. The most practical option is the La Caserne area, next to the car park and the shuttle departure point. Pontorson has simpler accommodation and a train station, and Avranches is close by if you are driving.
