What to see in Fréjus
Must-sees
Fréjus was founded by Julius Caesar as Forum Julii and became an important Roman port. From that city remain the amphitheatre, which still hosts shows, the Roman theatre, sections of the aqueduct, the Porte des Gaules and the so-called Lanterne d’Auguste, which marked the entrance to the ancient harbour. Fréjus holds the City of Art and History label.
In the historic centre is the episcopal complex, run by the Centre des monuments nationaux. It brings together the cathedral, the early Christian baptistery and the 12th-century cloister, whose 14th-century painted wooden ceiling keeps hundreds of panels with monsters, saints and scenes of daily life. After the old town, head down to Fréjus-Plage, with several kilometres of sand, or out to the red rocks of the Esterel massif for walks with sea views.
Free tours and guided visits
Civitatis has no free walking tours in Fréjus. What it lists is a ticket for the cathedral cloister, which lets you see the episcopal complex at your own pace, and an electric scooter tour around the Var, a different way to explore the coast and nearby landscapes. If you want more, the trips from Cannes or Saint-Raphaël around the Esterel and the Var coast are the usual alternative.
How long to spend
One day is enough for the Roman remains and the episcopal complex, as everything is close together in the centre. If you are travelling in summer, add at least another day for the beach or a hike in the Esterel. With three days you can add Saint-Raphaël, right next to Fréjus, and a boat trip along the coast.
Where to stay
The historic centre is the best base for exploring the town on foot, with restaurants and squares that are lively at night. If you are here for the sea, Fréjus-Plage and Port-Fréjus have hotels and apartments by the sand. In summer, accommodation fills up early, so book ahead. Saint-Raphaël, next door, is another option with a train station and more hotels.
