Where to stay in Marseille: the best areas
Vieux-Port
Around the Vieux-Port there are hotels of every category and apartments, many with views of the boats. It is the most convenient base for a first visit: Le Panier, La Canebière, the boats to the islands and the climb to Notre-Dame de la Garde are within walking distance, and the metro runs to the station.
Le Panier and La Joliette
Le Panier, the oldest quarter, has guesthouses and apartments on steep, atmospheric streets. Further down, La Joliette is the regenerated waterfront, with modern hotels near the Mucem, La Major cathedral and the ferry terminal.
Corniche and Prado
To the south, along the Corniche and Avenue du Prado, there are seafront hotels and quieter residences. The Prado beaches, the Vallon des Auffes and the road to the Calanques are close. It is best to get around by bus or car.
Saint-Charles and Cours Julien
Next to Saint-Charles station there are practical, budget hotels if you arrive by train or are heading out on day trips. Cours Julien, a short distance away, is the city’s alternative quarter, with street art, bars and holiday apartments.
