What is Montmartre?

It is the hill in the north of Paris, with the Sacré-Cœur basilica at the top, Place du Tertre and its painters, and steep streets with stairways. At its foot is Pigalle, with the Moulin Rouge.

Getting there

By metro, Anvers (line 2) and Abbesses (line 12), and the funicular leaves from Anvers. The Gare du Nord is about a 15-minute walk away.

In spring, in summer and at weekends. There are lots of small hotels, often with rather compact rooms.
