Staying near the Marais: what you need to know

What is the Marais?

It is the historic district on the Right Bank, between the Hôtel de Ville and the Bastille, with 17th-century mansions, the Place des Vosges, the Picasso Museum and the Centre Pompidou. It has shops, galleries, the Jewish quarter on Rue des Rosiers and lots going on at night.

Getting there

Metro line 1 stops at Saint-Paul and Hôtel de Ville and runs to the Champs-Élysées and the Gare de Lyon. Châtelet-Les Halles, a short walk away, has the RER B to the airports.

When rooms are hardest to find

In spring, in summer, at Christmas and during Fashion Week. Hotels are small and fill up quickly at weekends.

Which area to choose

The Haut Marais, to the north, is quieter and full of design shops. The area around Saint-Paul and the Place des Vosges is the prettiest, and towards the Bastille there is more nightlife and prices are a little lower.

If you’d rather be in the old town, see the hotels in Paris city centre or our guide to the best areas to stay in Paris.
