Staying near La Défense: what you need to know

What is La Défense?

It is the business district west of Paris, with office skyscrapers, the Grande Arche, a big shopping centre and the Paris La Défense Arena, which hosts concerts and rugby matches.

Getting there

La Défense-Grande Arche has metro line 1, the RER A, suburban trains and the T2 tram. The RER A reaches Charles de Gaulle-Étoile in about 5 minutes and Châtelet in about 10.

When rooms are hardest to find

Monday to Thursday, because of business travel, and on concert days at the Arena. At weekends there is usually more availability and better prices.

Which area to choose

Next to the esplanade are the business hotels. Courbevoie and Puteaux, a few minutes’ walk away, are residential districts with smaller hotels. If you are here as a tourist, factor in the RER ride to the centre.

If you’d rather be in the old town, see the hotels in Paris city centre or our guide to the best areas to stay in Paris.
