What to see in Amorgos

Must-sees

Amorgos is the longest and most mountainous of the Cyclades. Its emblem is the 11th-century Hozoviotissa Monastery, a white façade stuck to a cliff above the sea, reached by a stone stairway, where the monks welcome visitors with liqueur and loukoumi.

Chora, inland, has windmills and white houses below a rock topped by a castle. The coves of Agia Anna, where «The Big Blue» was filmed, the Livadi shipwreck and the old paths linking the villages are the best of the island.

Free tours and guided visits

Amorgos has few organised activities: some guided visits and boat trips along the coast, and hikes on the traditional paths.

How long to spend

Three or four days let you see the monastery, Chora and Aegiali and do a walk or two. Ferries are less frequent than to other islands.

Where to stay

Katapola is the most practical base for the port. Chora has the most charming guesthouses, and Aegiali a beach and trails.
