What to see in Ierapetra

Must-sees

Ierapetra, on Crete’s south coast, likes to call itself the southernmost town in Europe. It has a Venetian fortress, the Kales, by the fishing harbour, an old quarter with a mosque and an Ottoman fountain, and a seafront lined with tavernas.

Its great day out is Chrissi island, an hour away by boat: a nature reserve of golden sand, cedars and clear water. The Ha Gorge and the beaches of Makrygialos are close by too.

Free tours and guided visits

Ierapetra is mainly the starting point for boats to Chrissi, plus a few routes through the gorges and inland villages.

How long to spend

Two days let you see the town and spend a day on Chrissi. It is quieter and less touristy than the north coast.
