What to see in Naxos
Must-sees
Naxos greets the ferries with the Portara, the marble doorway of an unfinished temple of Apollo on an islet joined to the harbour. Behind it, Chora climbs to the Venetian Kastro, with its noble mansions, Catholic cathedral and a small archaeological museum.
It is the largest and greenest of the Cyclades: inland are marble villages such as Apiranthos and Halki, the giant kouros of Apollonas, the Temple of Demeter and Mount Zas. The west coast has the long beaches of Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna and Plaka.
Free tours and guided visits
Naxos has guided walks through Chora and the Kastro, routes through the inland villages and boat trips to the Small Cyclades, such as Koufonisia, and to Paros and Delos.
How long to spend
Three days let you see Chora, drive round the interior and spend a day on the beach. It is a big island: with a week you can do much more.
Where to stay
