Old town below the castle

The streets climbing towards the Sanctuary of the Vera Cruz form Caravaca's most charming core. Calle Mayor and the slope up to the castle run through here, and the church of El Salvador and the Caballos del Vino museum are close by. It is where the Caballos del Vino race in early May is lived most intensely.

Sleeping here lets you climb to the sanctuary before the groups arrive and walk back for lunch. The streets are narrow and sloping, so travel light. In jubilee years, pilgrims who complete the Camino de la Cruz on foot usually look for this area.

Gran Vía and the new town

The Gran Vía is the backbone of modern Caravaca. It is flat, with shops, cafés and banks, and from it you can walk up to the old town in a short while. The streets are wider and it is easier to leave the car near your accommodation.

It suits families, older people who prefer to avoid slopes and those planning trips around north-west Murcia.

Fuentes del Marqués and surroundings

On the outskirts, on the way to the Fuentes del Marqués, the landscape changes to orchards, groves and springs. In this part there are rural houses and country places to stay for those who want to rest, walk by the water or go hiking. You will need a car to get to and from the centre, unless you enjoy walking.

Cehegín, along the greenway

Cehegín is very close and shares the Vía Verde del Noroeste greenway with Caravaca, following the old railway line. Its old town, up on the hill, has mansions and the church of La Magdalena. If you cannot find a room in Caravaca at the height of a jubilee season, it is a quiet alternative with good road links.
