Calle Mayor and the Roman Theatre

The heart of Cartagena lies between Plaza del Ayuntamiento, Calle Carmen and Calle Mayor, all pedestrianised. Here you will see the modernista façades, such as the Casino and Casa Cervantes, and the entrance to the Roman Theatre, at the foot of Concepción hill. It is the area for anyone coming to see monuments who wants dinner around the corner. At night, tapas bars spread through the streets near Plaza de San Francisco.

Best-rated in this area: B&B HOTEL Cartagena Cartagonova, with a score of 8.5 from 6,290 reviews.

The port and Paseo de Alfonso XII

Facing the quay are Paseo de Alfonso XII, the Sea Wall and the ARQUA underwater archaeology museum. Sightseeing boats tour the bay from the port, and a panoramic lift goes up to Concepción castle. Staying near the water gives you long sunset walks with the centre a couple of steps away. If you arrive by cruise ship or your own boat, it is also the closest area to the moorings.

El Molinete and the University

Molinete hill holds an archaeological park with the remains of the Roman forum, and at its foot are restored streets with bars and a young crowd. To the east, the Polytechnic University occupies the old Naval Hospital and the Antigones barracks. It is lively on weekdays and a little more affordable than the front line of the port. It suits travellers on a budget or students.

Best-rated in this area: Sercotel Carlos III, with a score of 8.8 from 6,182 reviews.

The Ensanche

North of the old town, around Plaza de España and the Alameda de San Antón, lies the Ensanche, with straight streets and apartment blocks. It is more residential, with neighbourhood shops and fewer tourists. The train station is on Plaza de México, between the Ensanche and the centre.

From here it is easy to take the road to Cala Cortina, the closest beach to the city.
