Plaza de España and the harbour

Central Águilas fits into a few blocks between Plaza de España, with its fig trees and town hall, and the fishing harbour. Staying here puts San Juan castle, the casino and the terraces where people have an aperitif close at hand. At night people stroll round the square and along the harbour, and you can do everything on foot. The train station, with services to Lorca and Murcia, is also near the town centre.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Carlos III, with a score of 7.9 from 2,323 reviews.

Levante and Poniente beaches

The castle splits the town into two bays. On one side is Levante, with a long promenade facing the water; on the other, Poniente, more open with a wide stretch of sand. Both have seafront apartment blocks and shallow water, something families with young children appreciate. The centre is a short walk away, so you can leave the car parked for days.

Best-rated in this area: El Paso, with a score of 7.4 from 939 reviews.

Calabardina and Cabo Cope

To the north-east, at the foot of Cabo Cope, is Calabardina, a small cluster of low houses facing a calm bay. It is an area for diving and rocky coves, with a fish restaurant or two and little else. It is chosen by those who come to rest, snorkel or walk in the Cabo Cope regional park, with paths along the cliffs. To get to Águilas you need a car, as bus links are scarce outside summer.

Best-rated in this area: Miramar Habitaciones, with a score of 8.0 from 432 reviews.

Southern coves

Towards Almería the coast becomes volcanic and wild, with coves such as Calarreona and La Higuerica. In this part there are developments with pools and holiday rentals. It is the option for long stays with a car, looking for clear water and silent nights, although you will have to drive to the centre for dinner or shopping.
