What the Basque coast is like
It’s the coastline of Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia, between France and Cantabria: cliffs, fishing ports and surf beaches. Between Zumaia and Deba lies the Basque Coast Geopark, with its flysch cliffs.
Which area to choose
San Sebastián has the most choice and La Concha beach. Hondarribia and Pasaia, to the east, are charming towns. Zarautz and Zumaia have long beaches, and Lekeitio, Elantxobe and Bermeo are fishing ports in Bizkaia. Getxo is next to Bilbao.
When to go
July and August have the best weather and the highest prices, especially in San Sebastián. September, with the film festival, also fills up. It rains often outside summer.
Getting around
The Euskotren links San Sebastián with Zarautz, Zumaia, Deba and Bilbao, and there are buses to the coastal towns. The airports are Bilbao, San Sebastián and Biarritz.
