Where to stay in Lekeitio: the best areas

Old Town and the port

The heart of Lekeitio is the fishing port and the narrow streets climbing from it, with the basilica of the Asunción de Santa María presiding over the quay. Here are the pintxo bars, terraces facing the boats and fish restaurants. On a first visit, staying here puts everything on foot, including both beaches.

Weekend and summer nights are lively in the taverns. The streets are pedestrianised or very narrow, so leave the car in a car park at the entrance to town.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Silken Palacio Uribarren, with a score of 8.8 from 2,275 reviews.

Isuntza beach

Isuntza is the town beach, right by the port and sheltered by breakwaters, with calm water facing San Nicolás island. It is the choice for families with children: you are on the sand in a minute with the old town next door for lunch. You can walk to the island at low tide, but keep an eye on when the water comes back in. On summer evenings the walk beside the sand fills with families.

Karraspio and Mendexa

Across the Lea estuary, over the bridge, is Karraspio, a more open and wider beach that belongs to Mendexa. The area is more residential and quiet, with holiday homes and meadows on the hills. It suits those who put the beach and rest first, and surfers when there is a swell. The port is a short, flat walk away across the bridge.

Santa Catalina lighthouse and the farmhouses

Towards the Santa Catalina lighthouse and across the surrounding hills there are farmhouses and agritourism stays with views of the Cantabrian Sea. They are for those seeking silence and green scenery, usually getting around by car. The lighthouse has an interpretation centre on navigation and fishing. Bizkaibus buses run from Lekeitio to Bilbao and other coastal towns.
