Where to stay in Hondarribia: the best areas

Walled old town

The upper part of Hondarribia is enclosed by walls, entered through the Santa María gate. Inside you walk up Calle Mayor, between houses with coats of arms and wooden eaves, to Plaza de Armas, presided over by the castle of Charles V. On the way you pass the church of Santa María de la Asunción.

At night these streets fall silent. You will like it if you are travelling as a couple and want to stroll the old stones once the day visitors have gone.

La Marina

Below the old town is La Marina, the former fishermen's quarter. Its houses have balconies painted green, blue or red, and Calle San Pedro is lined with pintxo bars. It is the liveliest part of town at aperitif and dinner time.

From the quay a small ferry crosses the Bidasoa to Hendaye, in France.

The beach and marina

Hondarribia beach is on Txingudi bay, next to the marina and the fishing harbour. Its water is calm because it is sheltered by the breakwater, which makes it popular with families. From here the road leads to the Higer lighthouse and Mount Jaizkibel, with views of the coast. The bayside promenade links the beach to La Marina in a short walk.

Irun

Irun sits right next to Hondarribia, on the other side of the airport. It has Renfe and Euskotren stations, with trains to San Sebastián, and connections to France. It is worth it if you travel by public transport or are combining several destinations. There is a bus to go to Hondarribia for dinner. Irun also has more shops and city life.
