Where to stay in Deba: the best areas

Deba old town

The old core stretches between the estuary and the hillside. Here stands the Gothic church of Santa María, with a sculpted portal and a cloister well worth a stop. Around it are streets with pintxo bars, the town hall square and shops for everyday needs.

Deba has a Euskotren station on the line between Bilbao and Donostia, so from the old town you can take train trips along the coast. It suits you if you do not want to use the car.

Santiago beach

The beach fills the river mouth, with a seafront promenade and buildings facing the sand. It is the area families look for in summer: plenty of sand, beach services and the centre a short walk away. From here the flysch route sets off towards Zumaia, with cliffs of layered rock that are part of the Basque Coast Geopark. Out of season the promenade empties and the atmosphere is very calm, good for resting by the sea.

Itziar

High above the coast, the Itziar quarter clusters around its sanctuary. The Camino del Norte runs through it, and it is surrounded by farmhouses and agritourism stays with sea views. For pilgrims and hiking fans it is a convenient place to spend the night. To get down to the beach or the old town you will need a car or some patience with the hill. Nights here are silent and cool even in August.

Mutriku

The neighbouring town lies to the west, along the coast road. It has a sheltered fishing port, an old town of steep streets and beaches such as Ondarbeltz and Saturraran, the latter on the border with Bizkaia. If you prefer a smaller seafaring atmosphere and are travelling by car, it is a very close alternative to Deba. Its harbourside promenade has fish bars and terraces where you can eat watching the boats.
