Old town

The historic core clusters between the church of Santa MarΓa, the town hall and the Arco de San Juan, the last remnant of the wall. They are narrow streets with taverns, pastry shops and long-established stores. Staying here puts everything on foot and lets you have dinner in town without watching the clock. You will appreciate it if you arrive without a car, because parking in the centre is hard, especially in summer and during festivities.

Best-rated in this area: Andra Mari Apartamentu Turistikoak, with a score of 8.9 from 1,207 reviews.

The old harbour and Torre Ercilla

Facing the moored boats, the colourful houses look out over the water and the Torre Ercilla houses the Fishermen’s Museum. It is Bermeo’s most seafaring scene and the place to eat fish and have a drink on the terraces. Some balconies overlook the harbour, a good option for couples and anyone wanting to wake up with the sea in front of them.

The Euskotren station is near the centre, with trains to Gernika and Bilbao, and Bizkaibus buses also run along the coast from the town.

Best-rated in this area: Andra Mari Apartamentu Turistikoak, with a score of 8.9 from 1,207 reviews.

Mundaka

A few kilometres away, on the Urdaibai estuary, Mundaka is a small village with a harbour, a church by the water and a wave known to surfers worldwide. It has its own Euskotren stop and is quieter than Bermeo at night. It is ideal if you are coming to surf, explore Urdaibai or simply rest.

The road to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

The road from Bermeo towards Bakio passes farmhouses and meadows with views of the Bay of Biscay and leads to the access to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. There are very peaceful farm stays and rural cottages along it. It is hard without a car, but you will reach the hermitage early, before it fills up. In summer, check beforehand whether the climb to the hermitage requires booking a slot.
