Las Arenas (Areeta)

Las Arenas lies by the mouth of the estuary, with the Vizcaya Bridge in view and Portugalete on the opposite bank. It is a flat district with shops, terraces and a seafront promenade easy for pushchairs or bikes. Areeta metro station, on line 1, takes you to central Bilbao with no changes. It suits you if you want to combine Getxo with plenty of visits to Bilbao. You can also cross to Portugalete in the bridge’s gondola whenever you feel like changing banks.

Best-rated in this area: Puente Colgante Boutique Hotel, with a score of 8.8 from 2,331 reviews.

Neguri

Between Las Arenas and Algorta, Neguri is the area of grand early 20th-century mansions, gardens and very quiet streets. It has its own metro stop and access to the coastal walk. There are few places to stay and almost no nightlife. Choose this district if you are after rest and long walks by the sea.

Best-rated in this area: Palacio Arriluce Hotel - The Leading Hotels of the World, with a score of 10.0 from 495 reviews.

Algorta, Puerto Viejo and Ereaga

Algorta is Getxo’s liveliest centre. From here you walk down to the Puerto Viejo, the old harbour with its little hillside houses and pintxo bars, and to Ereaga, the most urban beach in the area. There are metro stops at Algorta and Bidezabal. It is the most balanced choice if you travel in summer and want the beach by day and atmosphere at night, all on foot.

Best-rated in this area: Villa nueva 1910, with a score of 8.0 from 732 reviews.

La Galea and Arrigunaga

To the north, the landscape opens into cliffs and meadows. By Arrigunaga beach and the Aixerrota windmill, and on the way to La Galea, the area is greener and more residential, with walking routes and views over the Abra bay. It suits families, surfers and those arriving by car, although you will be a little further from the metro. At sunset, the walk along the La Galea cliffs makes up for the distance.

Best-rated in this area: PensiΓ³n Basagoiti, with a score of 7.3 from 435 reviews.
