Where to stay in Sarria: the best areas

Rúa Maior and the upper town

The upper part of Sarria lives to the rhythm of the Camino. On the Rúa Maior and the streets climbing to the fortress are the churches of Santa Mariña and El Salvador and the convent of La Madalena, plus cafés that open early and shops selling pilgrim gear. If you are walking the next day, sleeping here saves you trips: you step out of the door and follow the yellow arrows.

In the evening the atmosphere is lively and international, with walkers from many countries eating on the terraces. On the other hand, the street is steep and some stretches are pedestrianised, so with a large case it is best to ask about access.

Best-rated in this area: Pensión Casa do Gallo Sarria, with a score of 9.5 from 1,744 reviews.

Lower town and the river Sarria

Down below, in the shopping area along the river, is everyday Sarria: shops, banks, set-menu restaurants and riverside paths, with benches and green spaces for stretching your legs after the walk. It is a good place for families or anyone who wants a break from the pilgrim scene without straying far from the slope up to the old town.

Around the station

Sarria has a train station on the line between Monforte de Lemos and Lugo, and many pilgrims arrive this way. Places to stay near the train and bus stations suit those arriving late or leaving early, and from there you walk up to the start of the Camino.

Barbadelo and the hamlets

Leaving via Ponte Áspera, the Camino soon heads into the countryside. In Barbadelo, with its Romanesque church of Santiago, and in the hamlets along the route there are rural houses and hostels among oaks and meadows. They suit those who prefer to get the first kilometres of the stage done and sleep in silence, or those driving who want a stone house with a garden.
