Old town and Santa María del Camino

Carrión’s core can be walked in a short while. The Camino Francés runs through its streets, taking you to the Romanesque church of Santa María del Camino and, a few steps away, Santiago, with a carved portal that is the town’s best-known sight. This part also has the Santa Clara monastery and most of the bars, shops and services.

Most pilgrims sleep here, in hostels and simple guesthouses. It is also the natural choice if you are coming to see the Romanesque without using the car. First thing you will see walkers passing with their backpacks, and at night the atmosphere is very quiet.

San Zoilo and the river Carrión bank

Crossing the bridge over the river Carrión you reach the monastery of San Zoilo, which keeps a Renaissance cloister you can visit. This bank is more open, with riverside walks and green spaces. It suits anyone looking for silence and river views, and the centre is just across the bridge. In the afternoon it is a good spot to sit on the bank as pilgrims leave town.

Villalcázar de Sirga

A few kilometres east, following the Camino towards Frómista, is Villalcázar de Sirga. It is a small village dominated by the church of Santa María la Blanca, huge for the size of the place and mentioned in the Cantigas of Alfonso X. Sleeping here means choosing the Palencia countryside and open skies. You will have fewer options for dinner or shopping, so it is best to come by car.

Approaches and roads out

On the edges of the old town, by the roads into town, there are places to stay with room to park at the door. They work well if you are touring the Palencia Romanesque and moving on the next day to Frómista, Sahagún or the Palencia mountains.
