Staying near Split old town: what you need to know

What is Split old town?

Split’s old town grew inside and around Diocletian’s Palace, built by the Roman emperor around AD 300: the Peristyle, the Cathedral of St. Domnius, the cellars and the medieval lanes.

Getting around from here

The Riva promenade runs in front of the palace, Bačvice beach is ten minutes away and Marjan park fifteen, up through the Varoő district. Ferries to Hvar, Brač and Vis leave from the port, five minutes away.

When the hotels fill up

From June to September, with Ultra Europe in July, places to stay inside the palace sell out early. Many are apartments and small rooms rather than hotels.

Which area to choose

Inside the palace there are boutique hotels in historic buildings. Varoő, to the west, is quieter with guesthouses; near Bačvice are the beach hotels.
