What to see in Bragança

Must-sees

Bragança, in the far north-east of Portugal, has one of the best-preserved medieval citadels in the country: a walled village with the castle and its keep, the pillory and the Domus Municipalis, a rare Romanesque civic building.

Outside the walls are the old cathedral, museums such as the Abade de Baçal and the Graça Morais contemporary art centre. Around the city spreads the Montesinho natural park, with stone villages such as Rio de Onor, split by the border with Spain.

Free tours and guided visits

There is no free walking tour in Bragança. The only thing Civitatis offers is a short visit to Marron, a space devoted to the chestnut, lasting about forty-five minutes.

To see the citadel, most people go on their own: it is compact and can be walked in a couple of hours.

How long to spend

One day is enough for the citadel, the castle and the centre. With two or three days you can tour the villages of Montesinho or head to the International Douro at Miranda do Douro.

Where to stay

Inside the citadel there are few places to stay, in old houses. Most hotels are in the centre, at the foot of the walls, and in the modern part of town. For nature, rural houses in Montesinho.
