What to see in Torres Vedras
Must-sees
Torres Vedras is a town in the Oeste region, about 50 kilometres north of Lisbon, surrounded by vineyards. Its centre revolves around the medieval castle, on a hilltop, with the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo inside its walls. Below, it is worth strolling to the Chafariz dos Canos, a 14th-century Gothic fountain, the 16th-century Graça church and convent, and the Church of São Pedro. The municipal museum holds archaeology, ethnography and painting.
The town gives its name to the Lines of Torres Vedras, the system of forts built in the early 19th century to stop the French invasion of Lisbon. The São Vicente fort, on a hill next to the centre, is the closest and is part of a historic route with interpretation centres. About 15 kilometres away is the coast, with Atlantic beaches such as Santa Cruz, well known for surfing. Its Carnival is famous throughout the country and fills the town.
Free tours and guided visits
There are no regular free walking tours in Torres Vedras. On Civitatis you will find beach activities, mainly surf courses on the municipality's coast, with equipment included and lessons for beginners. For history, the Historic Route of the Lines of Torres has an interpretation centre in town, and day trips from Lisbon combine the Oeste region with Óbidos or Peniche.
How long to spend
The centre, the castle and the Chafariz dos Canos can be seen in a morning. Add an hour or two if you want to climb to the São Vicente fort and understand the Lines of Torres. With a full day you can spend the afternoon on Santa Cruz beach, and if you come to learn to surf, it makes sense to stay several days near the sea.
Where to stay
For cultural visits and getting around by train or bus, the town centre is convenient, with urban hotels near the castle. If you come for the sea or the surf, the coast is better: Santa Cruz and the neighbouring beaches have apartments, guesthouses and hotels by the sand. Inland, among the vineyards, there are quintas and rural houses for those travelling by car.
