What to see in Loulé
Must-sees
Loulé is an inland Algarve town a few kilometres from the coast, with a lively historic centre and a strong craft tradition. The municipal market, an early 20th-century neo-Moorish building with red domes, is the most popular visit: inside they sell fruit, fish and produce from the hills. Very close by are the remains of the castle and the walls, and next to them the municipal museum.
In the old town, the highlight is the main church of São Clemente, of Gothic origin, surrounded by narrow streets with artisans' workshops working copper, esparto grass or leather. On a hill on the outskirts is the sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, with a small old hermitage and a large modern church, and good views towards the sea. Beneath the town there is a working rock-salt mine, an unusual and curious visit.
Free tours and guided visits
There are no regular free walking tours in Loulé. What you can book is the guided visit to the salt mine, which goes down into the underground galleries, and another visit to the art gallery set up inside the same mine. The historic centre and the market are easy to explore on your own. If you are on the coast, many inland Algarve trips include a stop in Loulé, often on Saturday, market day.
How long to spend
Three or four hours are enough for the market, the castle and the old town. If you add the salt mine and the sanctuary, allow a full day. With a little more time, it is worth going up to the hill villages, such as Querença, Salir or Alte, or down to the beaches at Quarteira and Vilamoura, about twenty minutes away by car.
Where to stay
Sleeping in the centre of Loulé is a good idea if you prefer a quiet, local atmosphere, with guesthouses and small hotels near the market. If your trip is about the beach, Quarteira, Vilamoura or Almancil have much more choice and leave Loulé close by. To switch off, the quintas and rural houses inland are another option.
