What to see in Peso da Régua

Must-sees

Peso da Régua is the gateway to the Douro valley, the oldest demarcated wine region in the world and a UNESCO landscape. From here the terraced vineyard slopes run down to the river, and for centuries the town was the port from which rabelo boats set off for Porto laden with barrels.

The Douro Museum, by the river, explains the history of the wine and the landscape. In the surroundings there are viewpoints such as São Leonardo de Galafura, one of the most spectacular in the valley. Upriver is the village of Pinhão, with its tiled station, and to the south, Lamego and its baroque sanctuary.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Peso da Régua: activities revolve around the river and the wine. There are boat trips on the Douro, cruises to Porto and tours of the valley with wine tasting and a boat ride.

Visits to quintas such as Avessada and trips to Lamego are also organised. The grape harvest, at the end of summer, is the liveliest time in the valley.

How long to spend

To get to know the Douro calmly you need two or three days: one for the town, the museum and a boat trip, and others for quintas, viewpoints and Pinhão. The valley roads are narrow and winding; avoid planning too many visits in one day, especially with tastings.

Where to stay

In town, by the river, there are practical hotels with restaurants nearby and the station on the Douro line. The most typical experience is to sleep at a quinta among the vineyards, with valley views and its own winery, on the surrounding slopes. You need a car for them.
