What to see in Vila Nova de Milfontes
Must-sees
Vila Nova de Milfontes is a white village at the mouth of the Mira river, inside the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. Its charm lies in the mix of river beaches, with calm and slightly warmer water, and open-sea beaches surrounded by cliffs and dunes.
In the village, the highlights are the small São Clemente fort, by the estuary, and the whitewashed streets around the church. Across the river is Furnas beach, and to the north and south, wild coves such as Malhão. The Fishermen's Trail, part of the Rota Vicentina, runs along the clifftops by the sea.
Free tours and guided visits
There are no free walking tours in Vila Nova de Milfontes: it is a destination for nature and the sea. What people book are water activities, such as paddleboarding on the Mira river and surf courses on the local beaches.
There are also kayak trips on the estuary and walking stretches of the Rota Vicentina, which you can organise on your own. Out of season many activities run on reduced hours.
How long to spend
It is a place to stay several days: two or three let you alternate river and sea beaches, walk a stretch of the Fishermen's Trail and visit villages such as Almograve or Zambujeira do Mar. In August it fills up; in spring and autumn it is much quieter and good for walking.
Where to stay
In the village there are small hotels, guesthouses and apartments, with the estuary and the restaurants a short walk away. In the surrounding countryside there are rural houses, Alentejo farms and eco-lodges, quieter and with a car. To walk to the river beach, choose somewhere near the fort.
