What to see in Vila Real de Santo António
Must-sees
Vila Real de Santo António was built in the 18th century on the same Enlightenment plan as Lisbon's Baixa: a grid of streets around Marquês de Pombal square, with its black-and-white stone paving. It faces the Guadiana and, on the other side, Ayamonte.
Three kilometres away is Monte Gordo, with one of the longest beaches in the Algarve and some of its warmest water, between the sea and the pine wood of the Mata Nacional. To the north, Castro Marim has a castle and marshes with flamingos.
Free tours and guided visits
There is no free walking tour in Vila Real de Santo António. What Civitatis offers is the river: boat trips on the Guadiana, one at sunset, another with lunch at Foz de Odeleite, a kayak tour and a 4x4 route through the Guadiana villages.
How long to spend
Half a day is enough for the square and the centre. As a beach base it works for several days, with Tavira twenty minutes away and Ayamonte a ferry ride across.
Where to stay
For walking and crossing to Ayamonte, the Pombaline centre. For the beach, Monte Gordo, with seafront hotels. For calm, Praia Verde, Manta Rota or Castro Marim.
