What to see in Pinhão

Must-sees

Pinhão is a small village in the Upper Douro, where the Pinhão river meets the Douro, in the heart of the Douro Demarcated Region. Everything revolves around port wine: the village grew as the departure point for the barrels, first on rabelo boats and later by train. Its station is the must-see stop, with azulejo panels showing scenes of the grape harvest and river life.

From the riverbank you can see the quintas of the big producers, with their vineyard terraces climbing the slopes. There is an iron bridge over the Douro and a railway bridge over the Pinhão river, and the village keeps its main church and a few manor houses. Climbing towards hamlets such as Casal de Loivos you reach viewpoints over the river's meanders. Autumn, with the harvest, is the liveliest season.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Pinhão, because the village is very small. What you will find on Civitatis are rabelo boat trips on the Douro, guided winery visits with port tasting and trips to Lamego, with its baroque sanctuary. There are also day tours from Porto that come here by train or car and combine a boat ride with quintas.

How long to spend

The village and the station can be seen in an hour. With the boat trip and a quinta visit, the day fills up easily. Ideally, stay one or two nights to see several wineries, climb to a viewpoint at sunset and, if you like, ride the Douro line to Tua or Régua.

Where to stay

In Pinhão itself there are hotels by the river and guesthouses near the station, convenient if you arrive by train. Many quintas in the surroundings rent rooms among the vineyards, often with a pool and views, though you will need a car. The hilltop hamlets, such as Provesende or Casal de Loivos, have quieter rural stays. Peso da Régua, half an hour away, offers more variety.
